The upside of technology innovations such as the rise of the Internet, social media and, the proliferation of mobile devices and applications, is the democratization of communication.
- It is now easier than ever to communicate with anyone, anywhere.
- Conversation has replaced top-down controlled communications.
- In addition, there are new and diverse channels to consider, for example social media.
The downside, is many companies have thrown strategic planning to the wind and continue to engage in social media conversations on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Google + etc without a well defined communication plan to guide their efforts.
The role of PR
According to the Public Relations Society of America, PR is “a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics.” To initiate, maintain or increase revenue technology companies, especially start-ups, build market awareness through persuasion. Savvy marketers and entrepreneurs are learning to use PR to adopt a “speak with” rather than a “speak to” approach to their business conversations to build mutually beneficial relationships.
Arguably, to ensure consistent, relevant and timely communication across all channels the need for core PR activities such as the development of strategic messaging and relevant media content is now more important than ever.
